The area of the Battle of the Trench, with Masjid al-Fath on the hill where the Prophet (peace be upon him) made dua for victory.
Why it matters
A place to remember the courage and teamwork of the companions and the power of dua in the hardest moments.
Read the history
In 5 AH a large confederate army besieged Madinah. On the advice of Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him), the Muslims dug a trench (khandaq) across the open northern side of the city. The siege ended when Allah sent a cold wind and unseen forces, as described in Surah al-Ahzab (33:9).
Small mosques were later built on the slopes of Jabal Sal’ at places linked by tradition to the companions. Masjid al-Fath stands where the Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have made dua for three days. Today the large Masjid al-Khandaq serves the area.
