Read the history
For about sixteen or seventeen months after the Hijrah, Muslims prayed towards Bayt al-Maqdis in Jerusalem. Then Allah revealed: “So turn your face towards al-Masjid al-Haram” (al-Baqarah 2:144).
According to the well-known narration, the news reached the people of Bani Salimah while they were praying in this mosque, and they turned towards the Kaaba in the middle of the prayer. The mosque has been rebuilt several times; today it has a single qibla towards Makkah.
