The Umrah guide step by step

Every rite and du'a, in nine short steps.

Step 1

Prepare before you travel

Intention, documents and booking, sorted well before you fly.

How to do it

  1. Make a sincere intention, for Allah alone.
  2. Learn the rites and the key du'as before you go.
  3. Book only with a MoRA-attested Umrah operator.
  4. Passport (six months' validity), visa, Nusuk permit, tickets and vouchers.

Two sets of Ihram sheets, and sandals that leave the top of the foot bare.

Duas for this step

Du'a for travelling When you set off and are seated in the car, bus or plane. First say 'Allahu Akbar' three times, then recite the du'a. On the way home, add the last line.

Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina la-munqalibun. Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-'amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin 'alayna safarana hadha, watwi 'anna bu'dah. Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safar, wa ka'abatil-manzar, wa su'il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl. On return: Ayibuna, ta'ibuna, 'abiduna, li-Rabbina hamidun.

Glory be to the One who has made this subservient to us, for we could not have done it ourselves, and to our Lord we will surely return. O Allah, we ask You on this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the One who takes care of the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from distressing sights, and from an evil outcome in wealth and family on return. On return: We return, repenting, worshipping and praising our Lord.

Sahih Muslim 1342 (the opening words are Qur'an 43:13-14)

Step 2

Enter Ihram at the Miqat

Before the Miqat: bathe, wear Ihram, make the intention and begin the Talbiyah.

How to do it

  1. Trim nails and hair, then take a bath (ghusl) or make wudu.
  2. Men wear the two white sheets; women wear modest everyday clothes.
  3. Pray two rak'ahs, unless it is a disliked time.
  4. Make the intention for Umrah, then recite the Talbiyah.
  5. Flying to Jeddah: wear Ihram before you board, and make the intention after take-off.
  6. Keep the Ihram rules until your hair is cut after Sa'i.

Recite the Talbiyah aloud, without shouting.

Duas for this step

Intention for Umrah (wording taught in Hanafi manuals) At the Miqat, after the two rak'ahs of Ihram and before the Talbiyah.

Allahumma inni uridul-'umrata fa-yassirha li wa taqabbalha minni

O Allah, I intend Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.

Hanafi manuals, adapting the du'a for Hajj in Mukhtasar al-Quduri and al-Hidayah ('Allahumma inni uridul-hajja fa-yassirhu li wa taqabbalhu minni')
The Talbiyah Right after the intention, and often until you begin Tawaf. Men recite aloud, women quietly.

Labbayk, Allahumma labbayk. Labbayka la sharika laka labbayk. Innal-hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk. La sharika lak.

Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Truly all praise and blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty. You have no partner.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1549; Sahih Muslim 1184

Hanafi school: Ihram begins when the intention is joined with the Talbiyah.

Step 3

Arrive in Makkah and enter Masjid al-Haram

Rest, refresh your wudu, and enter Masjid al-Haram with your right foot.

How to do it

  1. Keep reciting the Talbiyah on the way to Makkah.
  2. Check in, rest and make fresh wudu.
  3. Check the time slot on your Nusuk permit.
  4. Agree a meeting gate with your group.
  5. Enter with your right foot and the du'a; make du'a when you first see the Kaaba.

Keep both shoulders covered until Tawaf begins.

Duas for this step

Entering the mosque As you step into Masjid al-Haram, Masjid an-Nabawi or any mosque, right foot first.

Bismillah, was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahummaghfir li dhunubi, waftah li abwaba rahmatik.

In the name of Allah, and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, forgive me my sins and open for me the gates of Your mercy.

Sunan Ibn Majah 771; the short form is in Sahih Muslim 713; Sunan Abi Dawud 465 instructs sending salam on the Prophet (peace be upon him) before it
On first seeing the Kaaba When the Kaaba first comes into view.

Make any heartfelt du'a, in your own words and language.

No specific narration

Step 4

Perform Tawaf: seven circuits of the Kaaba

Seven circuits from the Black Stone, with the Kaaba on your left.

Tawaf counter

Tap the button each time you pass the Black Stone line. Keep this page open during your Tawaf.

How to do it

  1. Make sure you have wudu, and stop the Talbiyah.
  2. Start at the Black Stone line (the green light): raise your hand and say 'Bismillahi wallahu akbar'.
  3. Walk with the Kaaba on your left, outside Hijr Ismail.
  4. Between Rukn Yamani and the Black Stone, recite 'Rabbana atina...'.
  5. Make du'a in any language and complete seven circuits. If unsure of the count, take the lower number.

Right shoulder bare (idtiba) in all seven circuits; brisk steps (ramal) in the first three.

Duas for this step

At the Black Stone When touching, kissing or pointing to the Black Stone at the start of Tawaf. In later circuits 'Allahu Akbar' is enough.

Bismillahi wallahu akbar

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1613 (the Prophet, peace be upon him, pointed to the corner and said 'Allahu Akbar'); 'Bismillah' is added from the practice of Ibn Umar (Musannaf 'Abd ar-Razzaq 5/33, graded sahih by Ibn Hajar)
Between Rukn Yamani and the Black Stone On each circuit, between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone corner.

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar

Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Qur'an 2:201; recited between the two corners: Sunan Abi Dawud 1892 (graded hasan)

Hanafi school: Wudu for Tawaf is wajib: repeat a Tawaf done without it, or a dam is due.

Step 5

Pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim and drink Zamzam

Two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim, then Zamzam and du'a.

How to do it

  1. Men cover the right shoulder.
  2. Pray two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim, or anywhere in the mosque if it is crowded.
  3. Recite al-Kafirun in the first rak'ah and al-Ikhlas in the second.
  4. Drink Zamzam in three breaths and make du'a.

Both shoulders covered for the prayer.

Duas for this step

Approaching Maqam Ibrahim As you walk to Maqam Ibrahim after Tawaf, before the two rak'ahs.

Wattakhidhu min maqami Ibrahima musalla

And take the standing place of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.

Qur'an 2:125; recited by the Prophet (peace be upon him) on reaching the Maqam: Sahih Muslim 1218
Drinking Zamzam Before drinking Zamzam: make your intention and ask Allah for what you need.

Ma'u Zamzama lima shuriba lah

The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for.

Sunan Ibn Majah 3062 (a saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him, about Zamzam); Sahih Muslim 2473 (Zamzam is blessed and nourishing like food)

Hanafi school: These two rak'ahs are wajib after every Tawaf.

Step 6

Perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwa

Seven lengths from Safa to Marwa, with dhikr and du'a.

Sa'i counter 0 / 7

Tap when you reach the other hill. Safa to Marwa is one length; Marwa back to Safa is the second.

How to do it

  1. Begin at Safa: recite the verse once and face the Kaaba.
  2. Say 'Allahu Akbar', the dhikr of Safa, and make du'a.
  3. Walk to Marwa and do the same. That is one length.
  4. Finish the seventh length at Marwa. Wheelchairs and carts are available.

Jog gently between the green lights.

Duas for this step

Approaching Safa at the start of Sa'i Once only, as you approach Safa at the very start of Sa'i.

Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah, faman hajjal-Bayta awi'tamara fala junaha 'alayhi an yattawwafa bihima, wa man tatawwa'a khayran fa-innallaha Shakirun 'Alim

Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever performs Hajj to the House or Umrah, there is no blame on him for walking between them. And whoever does good voluntarily, then Allah is Appreciative, All-Knowing.

Qur'an 2:158; recited by the Prophet (peace be upon him) as he approached Safa: Sahih Muslim 1218
Dhikr on Safa and Marwa Standing on Safa (and later on Marwa) facing the Kaaba with hands raised in du'a: say 'Allahu Akbar', recite this, then make your own du'a. Do this three times.

There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant, and alone defeated the confederates.

Sahih Muslim 1218

Hanafi school: Sa'i is wajib in Umrah and valid only after Tawaf.

Step 7

Shave or shorten the hair (Halq or Taqsir)

Shave or shorten the hair. Your Umrah is complete.

How to do it

  1. After Sa'i, men shave the head (best) or shorten the hair.
  2. Use a licensed barber and a new blade.
  3. Women cut about 2 cm from the ends, in private.
  4. Your Umrah is complete: bathe and change.

Shaving is better; begin on the right.

Hanafi school: At least a quarter of the head must be shaved or trimmed.

Step 8

After Umrah: what is permitted, and the farewell Tawaf

Ihram ends. Worship freely, and make a farewell Tawaf before you leave.

How to do it

  1. Every Ihram restriction is lifted.
  2. Pray in the Haram: one prayer there is better than 100,000 elsewhere.
  3. Another Umrah: a new Nusuk permit and Ihram at Masjid Aisha (Tan'im).
  4. Make a farewell Tawaf before you leave Makkah, if you can.

No idtiba or ramal in extra Tawafs.

Duas for this step

Leaving the mosque As you step out, left foot first. You may begin with 'Bismillah' and salam on the Prophet (peace be upon him), as when entering.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik

O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty.

Sahih Muslim 713; Sunan Abi Dawud 465

Hanafi school: For Umrah, the farewell Tawaf is recommended, not required.

Step 9

Visit Madinah and Masjid an-Nabawi

Not part of Umrah, but a great blessing. No Ihram is needed.

How to do it

  1. Pray in Masjid an-Nabawi: one prayer there is better than a thousand elsewhere.
  2. Greet the Prophet ﷺ calmly in the visitors' queue.
  3. Book your Rawdah visit in the Nusuk app.
  4. Pray two rak'ahs at Masjid Quba, rewarded like an Umrah.

Rawdah slots are separate for men and women.

Sunan Ibn Majah 771; the short form is in Sahih Muslim 713; Sunan Abi Dawud 465 instructs sending salam on the Prophet (peace be upon him) before it
Greeting the Prophet (peace be upon him) at his grave In front of the blessed grave in Masjid an-Nabawi, calmly and in a low voice. Then greet Abu Bakr ('As-salamu 'alayka ya Aba Bakr') and Umar ('As-salamu 'alayka ya 'Umar'), may Allah be pleased with them.

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

Practice of Ibn Umar at the grave: Muwatta Malik, Book 9, Hadith 74 (no. 399); virtue: Sunan Abi Dawud 2041 (graded hasan), 'No one greets me but Allah returns my soul to me so that I return his greeting'; Sunan an-Nasa'i 1282: angels convey the salam of the Ummah

Questions

Questions pilgrims ask

Can a woman perform Umrah without a mahram?

Saudi rules allow it: the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah permits women to perform Umrah without a mahram, and women under 18 should travel with a parent or guardian. The Islamic ruling is a separate question. The Hanafi school, followed by most Pakistanis, holds that a woman should not travel 48 miles (about 78 km) or more without her husband or a mahram, including for Umrah. The Shafi'i and Maliki schools allow a woman to travel with a trustworthy group of women for an obligatory pilgrimage, and some contemporary Hanafi scholars allow exceptions only in cases of real necessity. Please ask your own scholar before booking.

What should I do if my period starts before Tawaf?

You stay in Ihram and can do everything except Tawaf and entering the mosque: keep reciting the Talbiyah and wait. When the bleeding stops, take a bath and then perform Tawaf, Sa'i and Taqsir (Sahih al-Bukhari 305; Sahih Muslim 1211). If your period starts after you have finished Tawaf, you can complete Sa'i and cut your hair. If your return flight truly cannot be changed and you cannot come back later, some Hanafi scholars allow Tawaf in that state as a last resort, with a dam given in the Haram; the act is sinful but the Umrah is valid. Do not rely on this without asking a scholar. To avoid the problem, plan your dates around your cycle; many scholars allow medication to delay a period if a doctor confirms it is safe.

Can elderly or disabled pilgrims do Tawaf and Sa'i in a wheelchair?

Yes. Nusuk lists free manual wheelchairs at Masjid al-Haram (eastern courtyard at the mass-transport entrance, southern courtyard near the King Abdulaziz Endowment, and western courtyard at the Shubaikah entrance), electric carts at set entrances, and free golf carts in the courtyards, with dedicated routes on the upper floors. Masjid an-Nabawi also provides free wheelchairs and golf carts, and elderly visitors may enter the Rawdah in a manual wheelchair. The upper-floor route is longer, so allow extra time. In the Hanafi school walking is required for those who are able, but anyone who genuinely cannot walk the distance may ride with no penalty.

How long does Umrah take?

The rites usually take 2 to 4 hours: Tawaf about 45 to 90 minutes and Sa'i about 45 to 90 minutes, plus prayer, Zamzam and rest. They can take much longer at peak times (Ramadan, holidays, Fridays and just after congregational prayers) and on the upper floors, where each circuit is longer. Sa'i is roughly 3 km in total. Elderly pilgrims can rest between Tawaf and Sa'i; they do not have to be done without a break.

I am flying from Pakistan to Jeddah. Where do I put on Ihram?

Before the Miqat, not at Jeddah. Flights from Pakistan usually pass over or parallel to Qarn al-Manazil before Jeddah, and the Saudi Ministry states that Jeddah airport is not a Miqat. Bathe, put on your Ihram clothing and pray two rak'ahs at home or at the airport in Pakistan, then make the intention and start the Talbiyah after take-off, at least about half an hour before landing. If you are going to Madinah first, you do not need Ihram on this flight. If you crossed the Miqat without Ihram, return to a Miqat before Tawaf; otherwise a dam is due.

Which vaccinations and health documents do I need from Pakistan?

The meningococcal ACWY vaccine (conjugate within 5 years or polysaccharide within 3 years, at least 10 days before arrival); a polio dose (bOPV or IPV) at least 4 weeks before travel, with the NADRA-linked NIMS certificate that is checked at Pakistani airports; and proof of COVID-19 vaccination if you are over 65, pregnant or have certain chronic illnesses (1447H rules; check for updates). The seasonal flu vaccine is recommended. Carry your medicines in their original packaging with prescriptions and a short medical report.
