The open plain between Mina and Arafat where pilgrims spend the night under the sky on the way back from Arafat.
Why it matters
A place of humility, where kings and labourers sleep side by side on the ground in the same white garments.
Read the history
On the night after the Day of Arafah, pilgrims stop at Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha together and rest under the open sky, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) did. The Qur’an commands the remembrance of Allah “at al-Mash’ar al-Haram” (al-Baqarah 2:198), and Masjid al-Mash’ar al-Haram stands on the plain today.
Pilgrims traditionally gather small pebbles here for the stoning at Mina.
