The plain of Arafat, where standing on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah is the heart of Hajj, and the small hill known as the Mount of Mercy.

Why it matters

The most important place of Hajj, and a powerful place to reflect on the Farewell Sermon's message of equality, justice and mercy.

Read the history

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said “Hajj is Arafah”, in a hadith reported by al-Tirmidhi and others. On the Day of Arafah pilgrims stand here in prayer from midday until sunset. It was at Arafat, during the Farewell Pilgrimage in 10 AH, that the Prophet (peace be upon him) delivered his Farewell Sermon.

Jabal al-Rahmah is a granite hill near where he stood, now marked by a white pillar. The whole plain of Arafat is the place of standing, not only the hill.
