The mountain south of Makkah where the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Abu Bakr hid for three nights during the Hijrah to Madinah.
Why it matters
A lesson in trust in Allah and in the loyalty of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the starting point of the Hijrah that began the Islamic calendar.
Read the history
When the Quraysh planned to kill the Prophet (peace be upon him), he left Makkah at night with Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and they sheltered in a cave near the summit of Jabal Thawr for three nights before continuing to Madinah.
The Qur’an refers to this moment in Surah al-Tawbah (9:40): “when they were both in the cave, and he said to his companion, Do not grieve, indeed Allah is with us.” Asma bint Abi Bakr brought them food, and Abdullah ibn Abi Bakr brought them news of Makkah.
