The mosque built by the Prophet (peace be upon him), where he is buried beneath the Green Dome, with the Rawdah, a garden of Paradise.
Why it matters
A prayer here is better than a thousand prayers elsewhere, except Masjid al-Haram (Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim). Visiting the mosque and sending salam on the Prophet (peace be upon him) is a cherished part of every journey.
Read the history
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) arrived in Madinah in 1 AH, he built the mosque with his companions from palm trunks and mud brick next to his home. He was buried in the room of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), now beneath the Green Dome, with Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) beside him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the area between his house and his pulpit is one of the gardens of Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari). Today’s mosque, with its giant umbrellas, has been expanded many times and holds over a million worshippers.
